Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Creating an Emotional Journey through Gameplay Animations

Description: Crumbling ledges, near death experiences, and strong relationships. Feelings of power, helplessness, and physical connection are all things that gameplay animation can help bring to life. This is a presentation on the creative direction for Shadow of the Tomb Raider from the perspective of gameplay animation. The animation team needed to be highly adaptable and flexible, as the content needs grew or changed with each milestone. I will share insights, highlight the creative successes as well as the challenges we faced as a development team – all with a focus on pushing the quality onscreen.
Targeted public:The session will interest fellow developers, students, and individuals who are keen on having a behind-the-scenes look at how we crafted Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Although this will not be a technical heavy presentation, some general workflow for animation & narrative games will be highlighted.
Takeaways: To indie and experienced developers alike, we understand there is no foolproof way of making games - every production is vastly different. Hopefully by sharing my experiences as part of the Shadow of the Tomb Raider development team, I can give you a different perspective on game development
